Our School

At Ottewell School, personal excellence is the standard. We are committed to unlocking each student's potential to maximize performance. We believe in the uniqueness and worth of each individual, the ability of every child to learn, a collaborative approach to teaching and learning and the importance of providing a caring, nurturing and supportive environment for learning. We believe that teaching and learning are the most important activities that take place in our school.

Emphasis is placed on the integration of technology into the curriculum across all subject areas. French and Mandarin second language programs and the Mandarin Bilingual program are offered. Academic Challenge classes are offered at all three grade levels to provide enrichment in the core subjects to students who are looking for increased academic rigour and opportunities. Special programming for CLS and CLS/BLA students is offered in both segregated and integrated settings with a differentiated curriculum. Specific reading comprehension learning strategies and higher order thinking skills are embedded in all subjects to assist students in improving their learning. All aspects of the school program emphasize the development of high personal standards for achievement and citizenship.

Ottewell is located in an older neighbourhood, drawing fewer than 20% of our students from the immediate community. Students travel to school by Edmonton Transit or car from a wide range of communities throughout the city. Grade seven students generally arrive from more than twenty elementary school locations. The school is a district site for the Academic Challenge Program for gifted and talented students, the Chinese Bilingual Program, CLS and CLS/BLA  programs. Our overall student population is multicultural and diverse.
